Spirulina






     What is blue-green, packed full of nutrients, and native to some of the most beautiful places on Earth? Spriulina. This algae is reported to be one of the most nutrient dense foods on earth. It's even being studied by NASA, to grow in space. But what other benefits does it have?


Medicinal Uses:


Nutrition- A single tablespoon of Spirulina contains 4 grams of protein, 15% of the recommended daily amount (RDA) of Riboflavin, 11% RDA of Thiamin, 4% RDA of Niacin, 21% RDS of Copper, and 11% RDA of Iron. It also contains a good amount of magnesium, potassium, manganese, healthy fats (omega-3s and omega-6s), and just about every other nutrient necessary for us.

Detox- Spirulina is super effective at detoxing heavy metals from the body, especially arsenic. It also helps reduce the symptoms of radiation sickness.

Candida- Candida is present in every part of the human body. It's necessary for a healthy balance of our microbiome. However, when it gets out of control, it causes major problems such as yeast infections. It's even been linked to several autoimmune disorders. Spirulina, however, helps keep Candida under control.

Sinuses- Allergic rhinitis, triggered by environmental allergens (pollen, animal dander, etc), is the inflammation of the nasal airways causing an excess of mucus production which can lead to stagnation and infection. Spirulina has been shown to reduce that inflammation, preventing the production of excessive mucus. 

Natural Energy Boost- Not only does Spirulina help improve our nutritional intake, it also helps to provide a natural energy boost. It also helps improve muscle endurance, making this a great supplement for athletes.

Cardiovascular Health- Spirulina is great for your cardiovascular system. It lowers triglycerides and LDL (bad cholesterol) while raising HDL (good cholesterol). It also protects LDL and keeps it from becoming oxidized, preventing a number of cardiovascular diseases. Spirulina also reduces blood pressure and helps to prevent the onset of anemia. 

Cautions- Some people may have an allergic reaction to Spirulina. People with phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid Spirulina. Spirulina should also be avoided by people with autoimmune conditions, as it could trigger a flare-up. It can also cause harmful interactions with certain medications used to treat inflammatory disorders.

Liberating Goldenrod





     Spring may not be the time of year when people expect to see Goldenrod. But it is the time of year when several people (especially in Florida) may need to use it. Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) blooms around the same time as Ragweed (Ambrosia psilostachya) and, unfortunately, has been accused of causing seasonal allergies in late summer to early fall. However Ragweed is typically the allergenic culprit. Goldenrod actually has very little pollen with which to cause allergy problems. And the pollen it does have is sticky so it rarely gets to be airborne. Most people who have been introduced to both plants don't know how they could be mistaken as Goldenrod's flowers are beautifully golden while Ragweed has nondescript green flowers. Even though they're both in the Asteraceae family, there's a really good bit of differences between the two, and the Herbal Academy has a very detailed blog post about just that.




     Goldenrod grows just about everywhere from North America to Europe, and even all the way to Asia. There are over 100 species and all of them are beneficial in several ways. The two considered to be the most medicinally beneficial are Solidago canadensis and Solidago odora. Even the colonists loved Goldenrod. After the Boston Tea Party, Goldenrod tea, which they called “Liberty Tea,” became so popular that it ended up being exported to China.

Medicinal Uses:


Summary of Actions- Diuretic, drying, aromatic, antioxidant, expectorant, antifungal, anticatarrhal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent, carminative, vulnerary, tonic, and diaphoretic.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)- Known as Huang Hua, Goldenrod is pungent, bitter, and cool. The meridians it works best on are the liver and gallbladder meridians. Goldenrod is used to dispel wind and clear heat, resolve swelling and remove toxicity. Especially useful when there is a sore throat, jaundice, headache, cold, urinary tract infections (UTI), kidney stones, fungal infection on the hands, or swelling on the back.

Seasonal Allergies- Goldenrod has an amazing ability to calm the runny eyes, runny nose, and sneezing that comes with seasonal allergies. Even Ragweed allergies. It's also an amazing decongestant.

Sinusitis, Flu, & the Common Cold- Goldenrod is antiseptic and antimicrobial, which makes it a great choice for dealing with a sore throat along with other symptoms of the flu, cold, and/or sinus infections. It also has great expectorant properties to help expel mucus from the lungs, and decongestant properties to dry those pesky sinuses. It's also extremely beneficial when fever is involved, as it helps open the pores and allows the body to sweat out the fever more efficiently.

Cardiovascular Health- Goldenrod is an excellent source of rutin which helps support circulation and capillary strength. It also shows promise in the lowering of cholesterol and preventing atherosclerosis.

Skin & Wound Care- Goldenrod's scientific name, Solidago, means “to make whole.” It certainly seems to work wonders on wounds. Helping speed their healing and preventing infections. It's also a great ally when dealing with eczema and other chronic skin conditions.

Kidneys- Goldenrod helps prevent the formation of kidney stones and can help clear out “urinary gravel.”

Bladder & Urinary Track- Goldenrod is super useful for the urinary system. It's astringent and antiseptic properties make it useful for treating both bladder and urinary tract infections. It strengthens and tones the urinary system and helps reduce inflammation in both the urinary track and bladder.

Anti-Fungal- Goldenrod works well to help deal with Candida type yeast infections such as thrush or vaginal yeast infections.

Muscle Pain & Arthritis- Recently, Goldenrod has become fairly well known to help relieve a wide variety of aches and pains. It's especially known to help muscle pain and arthritis.

Contraindications and Warnings- Goldenrod can be overly drying to those with a dry constitution, if taken over a long period of time. Consult your doctor, midwife, or herbalist before taking Goldenrod if you are pregnant, have heart problems, or have kidney problems. Minor allergic reactions may occur in a, very, few people.

Pesky Eczema

    Ever since moving to Central Florida, I have been plagued by itchy, easily irritated skin.  It flares up during certain times of the year, and especially when I am experiencing a high volume of stress.  The constant itching and scratching combined with burning irritation makes sure that eczema is annoying at best.  The term eczema is actually a blanket term that is used to describe itchy, inflamed skin with occasional blisters and/or scales.  It’s often used interchangeably with the term dermatitis, which translates to “inflamed skin.” 

    Like most of the chronic problems in life, eczema is mostly due to dietary factors in combination with environmental ones.  In short, eczema is inflammation.  Eating inflammatory foods can trigger it, and being in stressful, inflammatory situations can trigger it.  I have noticed that mine flares up worse in the summer as well, because of the stress of heat and the moisture I loose through excessive perspiration.  

    Conventional treatments all work on the external side of things, mainly by just suppressing the symptoms.  Some of these include bleach baths (I cringe at this thought because bleach makes my eczema much worse) and steroid creams.  Neither of which address the actual cause of eczema.  Eczema starts in the gut.  Yup.  You heard me right.  An annoying skin condition is actually caused by inflammation in your intestines.  This means that diet is really the only true “cure” or preventative measure for this condition. 

    Inflammation in your gut, which leads to eczema, is caused by food allergens.  The most common allergens are cow’s milk, eggs, gluten, soy, peanuts, fish, beef, corn, citrus, and tomatoes.  In order to figure out which one is causing your particular symptoms, you should stop consuming all of them.  After a period of time where you are symptom free, begin re-introducing them into your diet, one at a time.  Wait a period of time before adding the next one in so that you can assess your possible symptoms.  If you encounter one that causes issues, that’s your allergen.  You may have more than one, so continue the process until you have eliminated all of those allergens.  Other things that cause inflammation in your gut include herbicides, pesticides, GMOs, and radiation.  Eliminating these toxins from your diet is a good idea even if you do not show signs of eczema or other inflammation.  Also, inflammation in your gut can happen when there is an imbalance of healthy gut flora.  Probiotics are great to help prevent and correct this, as well as fermented foods (yogurt, Kombucha, keifer, etc). 

    Now that we’ve addressed the root cause, what makes eczema worse?  If you have eczema, then your skin is not holding in moisture properly.  This means that any harsh soaps or excessive scrubbing can wash away too many of your natural oils that help to hold in moisture, making your eczema worsen.  Harsh chemicals can do the same.  I’ve heard, through the years, that bathing is bad for eczema, that bathing is good for eczema, that you should or should not use lotion, etc.  There are many contradicting thoughts out there for what makes eczema worse, and what helps.

    What actually helps?  Hydration is key.  Internal hydration, by drinking plenty of water, as well as external hydration, such as soaking in lukewarm (not hot) water.  But hydration is not just about water.  You can be dehydrated and drink your weight in water every day, simply by not having enough fats/oils in your diet.  Healthy fats are the real heroes of hydration because they help our bodies hold in moisture.  Making sure your diet has plenty of healthy fats (coconut oil and flaxseed are both great sources) is a great way to stop eczema before it starts.  However, when a flare up does occur look to lotions, salves, and ointments.  These can all help by adding healthy fats to our skin to help it hold in the moisture.

    One of my favorite things to use is coconut oil.  In more northern climates, people consider coconut oil an already made salve.  In Florida, however, it turns completely liquid at room temperature.  But it still provides a great amount of moisture for hair, skin, and internally as well.  It also makes a great makeup remover, just wet a cotton pad with coconut oil and remove away!  Jojoba oil is also amazing to use with eczema.  Just apply it externally when needed.  Also, when you are thinking about baths, adding chamomile or oats to your bath can help ease the itching and burning of eczema as well as lessen the inflammation.  Lavender essential oil is also something I use for my eczema, it helps to prevent infections in any open wounds and it’s a natural pain reliever, so it helps to minimize the burning that accompanies excessive scratching.

    I hope this brief introduction helps you out and gives you a good start on living an eczema free life.
