Natural Hydration




     Growing up in Florida, I always knew that when I was dehydrated I needed to get some Gatorade. In recent years, I've also discovered Pedialyte, which is another rehydrating electrolyte drink, but geared more for children. Both are packed full of Vitamins and minerals and provide a great, easy way to rehydrate after a hard workout or in times of physical illness. However, both also contain some questionable artificial ingredients. If you want to have a better option available, I encourage trying these home made alternatives.


Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS)

(as published by the World Health Organization)

6 teaspoons Sugar
½ teaspoon Salt
4 cups of Drinking Water

Stir the mixture together until it's dissolved. The salt and sugar will dissolve better if you use hot water (not quite boiling) then allow the mixture to cool afterward.

This solution can be stored in a cool, dry place for 24 hours, or refrigerated to keep for up to 7 days.


Tropical Green Tea Rehydration


3 cups of Freshly Brewed Green Tea
1 cup of Pineapple Juice
½ cup Coconut Water
3 teaspoons Sugar
½ teaspoon Salt

Immediately after brewing your green tea, add in the sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Allow this mixture to completely cool. Add in the juice and coconut water. Enjoy!

This drink lasts, in the refrigerator, up to 3 days.

Hibiscus Lemonade Refresher


4 cups Hibiscus Tea
the juice of 2-3 Lemons (or about 1/3 cup Lemon Juice)
1/3 cup Raw Honey or ¼ cup Sugar
½ teaspoon Salt

Immediately after brewing your hibiscus tea, add in the honey (or sugar) and salt. Stir until dissolved. Allow this mixture to completely cool. Add in the juice. Enjoy!

This drink lasts, in the refrigerator, up to 3 days.


Orange Chamomile


2 cups Orange Juice
2 cups Chamomile Tea
¼ cup Sugar
½ teaspoon Salt

Immediately after brewing your chamomile tea, add in the sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Let mixture cool and add the juice. Enjoy!

This drink lasts, in the refrigerator, up to 3 days.


Cucumber Lime Cooler


1 Cucumber, peeled and diced
5 Mint Leaves
juice of 1 Lime
3 cups Drinking Water
1/3 cup Raw Honey or ¼ cup Sugar
½ teaspoon Salt

Warm up the water to almost boiling. Add in the honey (or sugar) and salt. Allow mixture to cool. Puree the cucumber and mint leaves in a blender. Pour the puree through a fine mesh strainer and press the solids to get all the liquid out. Combine cucumber juice with water mixture, stir in the lime juice. Enjoy!

This drink lasts, in the refrigerator, up to 3 days.


Cherry Powerhouse


2 cups Tart Cherry Juice
2 cups Apple Juice
¼ cup Drinking Water
1/3 cup Raw Honey or ¼ cup Sugar
½ teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon natural Calcium or Magnesium Powder

Warm the water to almost boiling. Add in the honey (or sugar), salt, and mineral powder. Stir until dissolved. Let mixture cool and stir in the juices. Enjoy!

This drink lasts, in the refrigerator, up to 3 days.


     In any of these recipes, feel free to change the juices and/or teas to make them more to your taste. Some standard substitutions I use in my home are grapefruit (or any other citrus) for lemons in the Hibiscus Lemonade Refresher. I also like to change up my herbal teas, during the winter I'll use a Ginger tea instead of a Hibiscus tea. Have fun, play around, and let me know what you think below!

'Tis the Season



    This is a great time of year.  People are typically more generous to each other, there are many family gatherings and holiday parties, and good spirits are shared all around.  However, there are also other, not so pleasant, things shared.  Welcome to cold and flu season.  The CDC releases information about cold and flu season every year.  Usually it starts in October and can continue on into May.  The worst part of it is February with December being strong in second place.  So now is the time to pump up your immune system in preparation for the hard times. 

     Prevention is the best medicine.  But how do you prevent the cold or flu? 
1.       Proper diet is paramount to health.  Most people should avoid grains, sugars, and other starchy foods, but everyone has different needs.  Good basics include eating organic as much as possible, drinking plenty of water, and “eating the rainbow.”  Eating the rainbow is my number one rule for daily consumption.  If you eat a wide range of fruits and vegetables from each of the colors of the rainbow, you are consuming a good variety of nutrients.  This season, focusing on the yellow and orange fruits and vegetables will also help you boost your immunity because those colors are associated with higher amounts of vitamin C. 
2.       Wash up often.  Wash your hands for 20+ seconds at a time, don’t forget between your fingers and around your nails.  Hand sanitizers can also help prevent the spread of these viruses, I make one at home that works well, if you are using my recipe, add in the optional rubbing alcohol for this time of year.  Also adding in 10+ drops of peppermint essential oil can help target viruses instead of bacteria. 
3.       Regular exercise helps boost the body’s immune function.  All you need is 45 minutes of stretching and/or moderate-intensity exercise a week in order to increase your immunity.
4.       Herbs can also be a huge help in prevention.  Garlic is great to help prevent and fight viruses, it is best raw and crushed because that releases the allicin which is the main compound that fights off viruses and the allicin can be destroyed by excessive heat.  Ginseng and Eleuthero (Siberian ginseng) both can help to boost immune function to prevent viral infections.  Astragalus has also been used in Chinese medicine to prevent viral infections.  Astragalus can be combined with garlic for a great broth, especially if you are making a bone broth which has many health benefits all its own. 
5.       Bone broth helps to boost immunity in addition to its other amazing benefits.  This is why chicken soup is so effective against colds and flu, it’s all in the bone broth. 



     When prevention is not enough we have to look at treatments.
1.       Avoid dairy.  Dairy increases mucus production which can slow healing.  And let’s face it, we’re already producing excess mucus while we’re sick, we really don’t want to produce any more. 
2.       Consume lots of hot liquids.  Warm teas, warm lemon water, soups, these are all beneficial while we are sick.  Our bodies really don’t need to be focusing on digestion much either, so drinking the warm liquids and eating mostly soup will help build up the body’s strength while not burdening it with lots of digestive issues.  Not to mention, bone broth is great at boosting immune function and herbal teas can have benefits all their own. 
3.       Herbs are wonderful remedies as well.  Adding fresh herbs to teas or soups can help speed up the healing process greatly.  Ginger helps with nausea, vomiting, high fever, and headaches.  Ginger goes well in teas and soups alike.  Nettle is a great multivitamin and can also help ease symptoms in upper respiratory infections.  I add it to most foods and it’s great in a tea with red raspberry leaves and peppermintElderberry is so good in treating the flu that you can now find elderberry medicine in your neighborhood drug store.  However it’s easy to make your own, Wellness Mamma has a great elderberry syrup recipe here and elderberry syrup is delicious so you should not have a problem getting your child to take some.  Yarrow is great whenever a fever is involved, and it’s especially good for children.  Unfortunately it is a bit bitter, so adding in peppermint and honey are a good idea, they are both also really good for colds and flu so they can add their own benefits as well.  All the herbs previously listed for prevention are also good to continue while you are ill.
4.       Increasing vitamins C and D intake can also be a great benefit.  These two vitamins help strengthen our immunity and fight off colds and flu. 
5.       Don’t hinder your body’s natural defenses.  We are coughing because our bodies are trying to expel virus-laden mucus from our respiratory track.  Keep coughing and try not to suppress it with over-the-counter medications.  Instead try thinning the mucus out with steam (essential oils can be beneficial here, eucalyptus and peppermint are two good ones) and drinking plenty of fluids.  It may be annoying and, in some cases painful, but as long as your cough is productive (you’re coughing up mucus) it’s beneficial to keep it up.  Same thing goes for your runny nose.  I like to make sure that I don’t sniffle back the mucus in my sinuses.  It can prolong sickness and possibly cause a sinus infection later on.  I just invest in the good tissues (I prefer to use the ones infused with vicks) and blow my nose often. 
6.       Hydration and rest can be the best medicine!  We need several additional hours of rest a day when we are sick, but we also need more liquids to help support immune function.

Pesky Eczema

    Ever since moving to Central Florida, I have been plagued by itchy, easily irritated skin.  It flares up during certain times of the year, and especially when I am experiencing a high volume of stress.  The constant itching and scratching combined with burning irritation makes sure that eczema is annoying at best.  The term eczema is actually a blanket term that is used to describe itchy, inflamed skin with occasional blisters and/or scales.  It’s often used interchangeably with the term dermatitis, which translates to “inflamed skin.” 

    Like most of the chronic problems in life, eczema is mostly due to dietary factors in combination with environmental ones.  In short, eczema is inflammation.  Eating inflammatory foods can trigger it, and being in stressful, inflammatory situations can trigger it.  I have noticed that mine flares up worse in the summer as well, because of the stress of heat and the moisture I loose through excessive perspiration.  

    Conventional treatments all work on the external side of things, mainly by just suppressing the symptoms.  Some of these include bleach baths (I cringe at this thought because bleach makes my eczema much worse) and steroid creams.  Neither of which address the actual cause of eczema.  Eczema starts in the gut.  Yup.  You heard me right.  An annoying skin condition is actually caused by inflammation in your intestines.  This means that diet is really the only true “cure” or preventative measure for this condition. 

    Inflammation in your gut, which leads to eczema, is caused by food allergens.  The most common allergens are cow’s milk, eggs, gluten, soy, peanuts, fish, beef, corn, citrus, and tomatoes.  In order to figure out which one is causing your particular symptoms, you should stop consuming all of them.  After a period of time where you are symptom free, begin re-introducing them into your diet, one at a time.  Wait a period of time before adding the next one in so that you can assess your possible symptoms.  If you encounter one that causes issues, that’s your allergen.  You may have more than one, so continue the process until you have eliminated all of those allergens.  Other things that cause inflammation in your gut include herbicides, pesticides, GMOs, and radiation.  Eliminating these toxins from your diet is a good idea even if you do not show signs of eczema or other inflammation.  Also, inflammation in your gut can happen when there is an imbalance of healthy gut flora.  Probiotics are great to help prevent and correct this, as well as fermented foods (yogurt, Kombucha, keifer, etc). 

    Now that we’ve addressed the root cause, what makes eczema worse?  If you have eczema, then your skin is not holding in moisture properly.  This means that any harsh soaps or excessive scrubbing can wash away too many of your natural oils that help to hold in moisture, making your eczema worsen.  Harsh chemicals can do the same.  I’ve heard, through the years, that bathing is bad for eczema, that bathing is good for eczema, that you should or should not use lotion, etc.  There are many contradicting thoughts out there for what makes eczema worse, and what helps.

    What actually helps?  Hydration is key.  Internal hydration, by drinking plenty of water, as well as external hydration, such as soaking in lukewarm (not hot) water.  But hydration is not just about water.  You can be dehydrated and drink your weight in water every day, simply by not having enough fats/oils in your diet.  Healthy fats are the real heroes of hydration because they help our bodies hold in moisture.  Making sure your diet has plenty of healthy fats (coconut oil and flaxseed are both great sources) is a great way to stop eczema before it starts.  However, when a flare up does occur look to lotions, salves, and ointments.  These can all help by adding healthy fats to our skin to help it hold in the moisture.

    One of my favorite things to use is coconut oil.  In more northern climates, people consider coconut oil an already made salve.  In Florida, however, it turns completely liquid at room temperature.  But it still provides a great amount of moisture for hair, skin, and internally as well.  It also makes a great makeup remover, just wet a cotton pad with coconut oil and remove away!  Jojoba oil is also amazing to use with eczema.  Just apply it externally when needed.  Also, when you are thinking about baths, adding chamomile or oats to your bath can help ease the itching and burning of eczema as well as lessen the inflammation.  Lavender essential oil is also something I use for my eczema, it helps to prevent infections in any open wounds and it’s a natural pain reliever, so it helps to minimize the burning that accompanies excessive scratching.
